Audi Q3 Hatchback First Drive & Performance

Audi Q3 Overview

The Audi Q3 is crafted in the athletic silhouette to showcase company’s excellence of merging beauty and sportiness convincingly. This urban vehicle is very well designed to look vigorous with some impressions of sophistication all across its profile and what makes the Q3 more adorable is the addition of innovative features like the 3D grille, Chrome plated tailpipe and Optional LED headlamps. Moreover, regular features such as Xenon plus headlamps, Front fog lights, LED rear lamps (optional), Electrically adjustable + Heated + Power folding and Auto Dimming ORVMs with LED blinkers, Panoramic glass roof and Aluminium alloy wheels make its appearance more striking. The inside also looks very soothing with the usage of premium leather upholstery, premium plastics and creation of optimum space for the occupants. Added to this, it also gets good space to gobble plenty of touring stuff. The Q3 also gets new elements like Auto drive select, Hill decent control and Power lumbar support that makes it more comfortable to drive. For information on contact details of Audi car dealers in Pune

Audi Q3 Style & Look

There are minimal changes to the exterior of the car. At the front, the car dons a new face with the bold singular frame grille that gets matte chrome finish. It extends all the way to the headlamp and forms a contrast with the body colour, making the front appear sportier than before. The redesigned front bumper gets black inserts for the fog-lamp housing, interestingly there are no fog lamps here. That is because, the car gets new all-LED headlamps (first in segment) with DRLs, which Audi claims, offers the enough illumination even in the foggy conditions. The other change is to the internals of the headlamp, the shape of the day time running lamps is different and they are visibly larger than before.

The only change to the side profile is the addition of the new ten-spoke alloy-wheels that look elegant. The changes to the rear are even lesser; the internals of the tail lamp have been altered, but unless one has spent a lot of time with its predecessor, the changes will be hard to notice. The new turn indicators though are instantly noticeable, the dynamic indicators illuminate from inside out in the direction of the turn.Although the changes are limited, I still like the way the new Q3 looks. It is more aggressive than before, but importantly Audi has managed to do it in a subtle manner. There are no additional cuts and creases on the body like on the new Mercedes cars, the aggression comes just from the face and stance. If I were to draw an analogy, while the entry-level Mercs look like hardcore action heroes like Sylvester Stallone, the new Q3 has the demeanor of Jason Statham.

Audi Q3 Cabin & Space

The cabin of the 2017 Audi Q3 is very nice, with styling and materials that seem worthy of the Audi brand. In keeping with the sporting nature of the automaker’s lineup, the interior has a distinctly sports car feel thanks to sharp-looking gauges, metal accents and a center stack that’s slanted toward the driver. When it comes to ergonomics, the Q3’s otherwise well-considered layout loses points for climate controls that are awkwardly located low down, in a spot in front of the shift lever. The single large knob that’s used to move through the menus of the MMI system is also curiously located higher up on the dash, which can make for an uncomfortably long reach. The other glaring omission is the lack of a USB port for feature-rich smartphone integration, something that’s pretty common these days.

Up front, occupants will enjoy roomy accommodations with well-shaped seats that provide firm support. In back, the seats themselves are fine, but the lack of available legroom — 31.1 inches as compared to 36.1 inches in the Lexus NX 200t — means they’re realistically only suited to young children. When it comes to hauling stuff in addition to people, the Q3’s cargo hold offers just 16.7 cubic feet of capacity behind the rear seats. With those rear seats folded down, cargo capacity expands to a more reasonable 48.2 cubic feet.

Audi Q3 Engine & Gearbox

Petrol Q3s start with a turbocharged 1.4-litre unit driving the front wheels. It’s powerful and rarely forces you to change down on steep hills. In fact, we’d choose it over the more powerful 2.0-litre engine since that one is available only with quattro four-wheel drive, and is less efficient as a result.

At the top of the range sits the RS Q3. It’s all-wheel drive and automatic only, and gets a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine. It’s extremely quick in a straight line; there’s even a Performance version that’s quicker still, thanks to a power boost.

Of the two diesels, the lower-powered unit is the best. It’s easily strong enough to cope with a full load, pulling from low down over a wide band. The higher-powered diesel feels more strained under load and is hard to justify.

Audi Q3 Driving Dynamics

For the most comfortable ride it’s worth sticking with SE trim, or deselecting the lowered suspension offered on more expensive S line cars (a no-cost option). In this guise the Q3 does a brilliant job of keeping large bumps and ruts under control at low speeds, and keeping the car’s body stable. That said, even if you do decide to keep the S line model’s lowered suspension and larger wheels, the Q3 does a far better job of keeping its ride controlled than other S line models in the Audi range. Even the lowered RS Q3 remains composed, even over patchy surfaces.Unfortunately, the faster you go in any trim level, the more uncomfortable the ride becomes. The car thumps into large potholes and expansion joints, jostling its occupants.

Raising the ride height of any car doesn’t do much for its handling but, among rival SUVs, the Q3 deals with it better than most. There’s plenty of grip in tight turns and body lean in corners is fairly well controlled.S line models have larger alloy wheels than entry-level SE cars, as well as lowered suspension. These contribute to even higher levels of grip and body control. However, although the steering winds on and off smoothly, and the Q3 is relatively quick to turn in, it doesn’t have a great deal of feel, meaning you can’t quite sense the front wheels biting and so plot an accurate course through bends. Even the high performance RS Q3 fails to communicate with the driver, although it does resist roll better than lowlier versions.

Audi Q3 Safety & Security

When compared with its small SUV rivals, the Q3 falls short of the class best but still performs well with regards to safety. In fact, examining its five-star Euro NCAP rating more closely, it’s evident that the model’s child protection rating is near the top, although its pedestrian rating is only average. The Q3 provides most of the safety kit you’d expect: six airbags, including curtain bags that extend into the rear of the cabin, electronic stability control and ISOFIX fittings for the front passenger and two outer rear seats. However, automatic emergency braking isn’t available.

There’s a long, and largely reasonably priced, selection of optional safety and security kit including visual and acoustic front and rear parking aids, rear side airbags, and active lane assist and blind spot assist. To ward off thieves, deadlocks, locking wheelnuts and an alarm are also included. It’s enough for the Q3 to have earned five-star ‘theft-of’, and four-star ‘theft-from’ ratings from to security experts Thatcham.

Audi Q3 Bottomline

The Audi Q3 has had it easy since the time it was launched in India because it was quick to beat the BMW X1 in the sales chart while it held off fresh competition from its Stuttgart rival with relative ease. With all the updates made to the car, although none are to the engine or suspension, the Q3 continues to be the best luxury compact SUV in the market today. Audi is starting off with the diesel model as that’s where majority of the sales come from but soon the petrol version will arrive and even the manual gearbox equipped Q3 S (which is our pick of the Q3 range). Now Audi only needs to bring the Q3 RS to tackle the GLA 45 AMG, we are waiting!
