India’s compact SUV market is booming and the demands of this compact SUV has risen to a great height recently we have also got plenty of new products in this segment which has given Ford some tough competition. The recently launched Hyundai Creta has won most of the heart with its feature packed interior and powerful engines. Hopefully Ford will be able to win back some of their consumers nheart after they introduce this new and updated compact SUV.

Ford EcoSport Design

Changes to the face of this EcoSport S as compared to the standard car include a gloss black grille, blacked out fog lamp bezels and HID head lamps. The top has been trimmed out in full black while a sun roof (or fun roof as Ford calls it) has been added to this version. As a part of the S design package you also get these lovely looking diamond cut R17 alloy wheels and at the rear, a very sporty looking S badge. The large wheels in combination with forward leaning stance and blacked out elements on the fascia give the car an aggressive and angry look, something that really enhances the overall sporty feel of the car.

Ford EcoSport Cabin

Now, this is where the EcoSport felt dated and Ford has addressed this issue. The dashboard layout is entirely new and so are the steering wheel, aircon vents and the instrument console with the multi-information display. The centre console and the door pads get orange finishing that breathes freshness into the cabin. There is an 8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on offer. The new touchscreen is super responsive and also feels very smooth to use. The steering wheel houses controls for the infotainment system and cruise control etc. The quality of materials used inside the cabin is just impeccable.

The EcoSport gets all-new seats at the front and these are far more comfortable and supportive. The cushioning has been made softer too. At the rear, space is still limited and it is a difficult task to make 3 people sit. Knee room is less while head room is good and shoulder space is good enough too if only two passengers are sitting. However, the rear seat is still very comfortable and provides good support to the body.

Ford EcoSport Gearbox

While, the diesel is Ford’s familiar 1.5-litre four-cylinder motor, it’s the petrol engine that we are interested in as this is Ford’s award winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. This is not a new engine but rather, it’s making a comeback for this generation of the compact SUV. It’s a three-cylinder turbocharged motor and produces 123bhp@6000rpm and 170Nm@1500rpm and for the first time, it is being offered with a six-speed manual gearbox. One of the main purposes of a low capacity turbocharged petrol engine is to offer even performance over a larger range and that is exactly what this EcoBoost motor does. It pulls linearly from as low as 1500rpm with a mild but noticeable boost at around 2000rpm. There’s a constant (and linear) build up to the 4000rpm mark after which the push starts to taper off. It’s not the most refined engine and you do feel the unbalanced thrum commonly associated with three-cylinder motors, but far lesser than before as Ford has upped the quality of NVH insulation.

Ford has managed to efficiently space out this power and torque with the six-speed gearbox that it has mated to this engine and this is visible in the fact that you can do 100kmph in sixth gear at as low as 2200rpm. This means pottering around at city speeds or lower won’t have you reaching for the gearbox constantly to keep the engine in the meat of its ability. That being said, the shifts themselves don’t feel slick and you do have to put in some extra effort to shift the cogs. Even the clutch feels unusually heavy for a small petrol powered vehicle.

Ford EcoSport Driving

The Ford EcoSport has always had a fun-to-drive nature and the new car doesn’t miss out on the fun factor. The steering continues to feel light enough at city speeds while it weighs up nicely on the highways. It also offers a good amount of feedback. The suspension has been softened a bit which makes the ride a lot more better, though it is still a bit on the stiffer side. The new low-profile tyres on the top variants also add to the stiff ride while lower variants with higher profile tyres may make the ride feel a bit more softer. Grip from the new tyres is very good and braking performance on the EcoSport is also well-suited to the weight and size of the car.

Ford EcoSport Safety

Ford is offering 6 airbags on the top variants of the EcoSport while the base and mid variants get dual front airbags. Apart from that, you also get ABS and Traction Control. The AT variant also gets Hill Start Assist. Talking about the after sales service of Ford, it does have a good reach across India and moreover Ford cars these days are known to be cheaper to own and maintain. Ford has stated that the EcoSport will cost Rs. 39,000/- to maintain over period of 1 lakh kms for the petrol variants while the diesel counterpart will cost Rs. 46,000/- to maintain.

Ford EcoSport Conclusion

The new updated 2017 Ecosport definitely looks interesting, the new exterior styling, new and updated interiors with modern connectivity features definitely adds a premium feel to the compact SUV. The US Spec variant also gets a more powerful 2.0 Liter unit which is available with a 4 wheel drive option as well which increases the potential of this new compact SUV even more. As already mentioned above expect this new compact SUV to hit the Indian market by the year 2017 to take on its biggest rival Vitara Brezza which too will receive a petrol drivetrain as well.
