Volkswagen Polo GTI Overview
The auto aficionados across the nation had been waiting eagerly for the Volkswagen Polo GTI due to its impeccable performance. It was at the 2016 Auto Expo in February that the company hinted that it might actually introduce the Polo GTI hatch in the Indian market, as it was being showcased for the first time at the Volkswagen podium in all its glory. Well, now it’s finally been here, but with a limited batch of just 99 units. The 3-door hot hatch comes with sporty styling, sophisticated cabin and sterling performance. It would lock horns with the Mini Cooper hatch in the Indian market. View offers on Volkswagen Cars from Volkswagen dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop
Volkswagen Polo GTI Style & Look
The light the body, the better is the performance. The smaller the wheelbase the better will be the handling. The Polo GTI for India will be a two-door version. This means it will be an ideal recipe for the enthusiasts. There is hot hatchback in India at the moment, which is two door. The Polo GTI will be coming to India with 17-inch alloy wheels mostly with Bridgestone Potenza low profile tyres.
The fascia will resemble the Polo, however there will be a lot of differences in styling. This one will be a lot more sporty and this will be coming with a body kit as well. The Volkswagen Polo GTI will be getting red colour disc brakes and all the four brakes will have discs. Ohh and not to forget the dual exhaust pipes. The GTI can be instantly recognised, not just because of two doors but even its sporty stance that makes it a great option to consider.
Volkswagen Polo GTI Cabin & Space
The Volkswagen Polo GTI interior has sporty front seats with enlarged bolster and height adjustment, while the rear seats offer a 60:40 fold function. The seat trim covers are finished in fabric ‘Clark’ with GTI signature red colour strips and stitching. There is a sporty flat-bottomed leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with ‘GTI’-inscribed red stitching and paddle shifters. The company engineers have provided a plethora of storage compartments in the hatch in the form of drawers under the front seats, sunglass, coins, card and pen holders inside the glove box, bottle holders in the front doors, map pockets at the back of the front seats, coat hooks at the rear, etc., to mention a few. The front centre console houses a 12 V outlet to charge your smartphone. It gets hill start assist, cooled glove box, start/stop system with generative braking, cruise control, climatronic air conditioning system and luggage compartment lighting. A music system with 6 speakers, and Aux-in, USB and Bluetooth connectivity is a standard feature on the hatch.
Volkswagen Polo GTI Engine & Gearbox
This is the exciting bit. Under the hood of the GTI is a retuned version of the 1.8-litre TSI motor that powers the current Octavia. This iteration makes 192bhp between 5,400rpm and 6,200rpm; which is 12bhp more than the 180bhp that’s made in the Skoda Octavia. It goes without saying that it’s the engine that makes the GTI live up to its ‘hot hatch’ moniker. What’s nice about this motor is the manner in which it picks up pace in an extremely linear fashion in spite of turbo boost being in full swing.
The feeling of speed is masked well and it’s only when you glance at the speedo that you realise how deceptively quick it is. Briskly racing off the mark when the throttle is slammed in Sport mode, the lightning-quick shifts are actuated by the seven-speed DSG ‘box at the 6600rpm redline. In case you want to be in total control of gear shifts, a manual mode with paddle shifters is also in the offing.
In this mode the DSG holds the gear all the way to the red line before shifting, and throttle responses are quick everywhere in the rev-range. This also reflects in the 0-100kmph run which is despatched in 6.57sec. However, if you’re not in the mood for some spirited driving (I couldn’t see that happening!), sticking to the ‘D’ mode makes sense with its less maniac responses. The reaction from the motor, in kickdown for 20-80kmph and 40-100kmph sprints that were clocked in 4.21sec and 4.77sec, is an indication of how overtaking can be swiftly accomplished.
Volkswagen Polo GTI Ride & Handling
The Volkswagen GTI has a precise steering but I would have liked the feedback to be slightly better. It is very precise though. The car stays planted at high speeds on straights but on roads with some uneven surfaces, there is a tad loss in composure. The suspension is also stiffly set which makes sure you get better body control while the ride quality gets affected slightly. However, the ride isn’t bad at all and the GTI still feels comfortable. Braking power is sharp thanks to the all 4 discs while the grip from the 215/45/16 tyres is also very good.
Volkswagen Polo GTI Braking & Safety
Volkswagen Polo GTI gets electronic stability control with driver steering recommendation, ABS, ASR, EDL and EDTC. Other primary safety provisions on the Polo GTI are wheel locks with extended anti-theft protection, electronic differential lock XDS, 6 airbags, ISOFIX anchorage points, height adjustable 3 head restraints, 3-point height adjustable seat belts, power windows with anti-pinch mechanism, park distance control, rear fog lamp, front fog lamps with cornering lights and rear window wiper with intermittent control.Exterior gets a bunch of features like LED headlamps with DRLs and RED inserts, sporty bumpers, signature honeycomb grille, dual chrome exhaust pipes, body cladding on seal panel, reflectors on bumpers, ORVMs with turn indicators and dark red tail lamp assemblies. Cabin comes equipped with multifunctional leather wrapped steering wheel with multiple controls, paddle shifters, storage compartments in front doors, fabric seat covers and drawers under front seats among several others.

Volkswagen Polo GTI Bottomline
There was a big hue and cry online about the price, but try this forperspective – in the UK, the Polo GTI is priced head on with the Mini Cooper S. In India, both are CBUs but the Mini costs considerably more. Yes, the Volkswagen Polo GTI looks remarkably similar to its humble sibling, but that’s where the familiarity ends. The Polo GTI is tremendous fun and alsoundoubtedly the best-handling car in VW India’s line-up. I’ll go one step further and say with confidence thatit’s the best driver’s car below Rs 30 lakh. The engine is a nutter and there’s more than enough power for our road conditions. For all that performance, you also get the practicality of a boot and decent space in a well-appointed cabin.
However, it’s quite obvious that looks are not a concern for a GTI buyer; this customer is looking out solely for a sharp and hardcore driving experience. Ironically, in making the Polo GTI more mass appeal, Volkswagen has lostsome of the magic that appeals to the car’s target customers.Regardless, at Rs 25.65 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai), nothingcan keep you entertained like thePolo GTI.
