Tata Safari Storme Overview

Tata Safari is one of the India’s first Indigenous and best selling SUV present in Indian Market for more than a decade now. Safari Storm is based on its sibling ARIA’s X2 Platform which has more strong Hydro formed Chassis sections, new 2.2 liter,16 valve DOHC Common Rail Direct injection diesel Engine named VARICOR with Variable Turbine Technology and new G76 MarkII Gearbox. Your next question would be…“So what’s new?” Though the new Storme’s overall design is very similar to the previous Safari, this new model is a complete generation change over the predecessor. You can be sure that this is an entirely new vehicle under the relatively familiar looking body panels. Whether the rumour mills about the shorter wheelbase version of the Aria are true or not, it is a fact that Tata engineers picked up this platform for the new Safari Storme.

This relatively fresh, more modern, ‘body on frame’ platform is lighter, yet stiffer and was specially developed for off-roader type vehicles like the Aria and the Safari. The result of the new platform adoption is that the Safari Storme is wider and longer, with wider tracks too. Though it is a tad lower than the predecessor, the new Storme is still the big, burly SUV and needs to be climbed into. The Storme is also still a hulking ‘2-tonner’, though it has shed some flab compared to the previous–gen.

The near vertical tail gate, the glass area and the moulded body side cladding of the new Safari Storme are all elements that remind me of the outgoing model. But look more closely and some of the design changes and quality improvements become more evident. The headlamps and the tail-lamps are of course all-new, with just mild references to the predecessor. The spare wheel mounted on the hatch door is now gone, in keeping with the Storme’s attempt at looking more like a premium crossover. There are sharper edges all around, including for the bonnet, A-pillar and side panels.

The finish and integration quality of the body side mouldings is much better and there has been liberal use of chrome (at least in the top-end trim) to increase the premiumness of the new Storme. Chrome strips boldly announce the new Safari’s moniker at the front and the rear. The 16-inch rims that the Storme sports look puny, but the high-pro 235/70 R16 Bridgestone Dueler tyres just about manage fill out the wheel arches to hide much of the gap. Twin exhaust ends at the rear work to give the Safari Storme a sporty image.

Whether Tata engineers chose to retain the familiar overall design in the new Storme to save on development costs or as a conscious effort to carry forward the popular image of the vehicle, the bottomline is that the successor clearly has a lot of the Safari’s genetic material still in it. My guess is that it would have been a combination of both factors.

Tata Safari Storme Cabin & Comfort

The cabin is one of the areas where Tata has played smart with respect to the facelifted version. The earlier version of Safari Storme was not visually appealing especially when we compare it to recent cars launched by Tata Motors. In this latest model it seems Tata has put plenty of efforts. The dashboard with dual-tone scheme looks a lot neater with quality and fit and finish significantly enhanced. The steering wheel has been shared from the Zest sedan which is a nice addition. Though the dashboard is better, the design isn’t contemporary.

Coming to the ergonomics, the buttons and switches on the centre console are slick to operate but sadly look outdated if we see from today’s perspective. Regarding space, the SUV continues to offer plenty of it and the comfort levels improved several notches with better seat cushioning and fabrics. This time around, Tata has updated the seat fabrics to Java Black with silver accents to enhance the visual appeal. The equipment list has also been slightly updated. In the age of touchscreens, the carmaker is relying on the conventional setup. However, what is good here that the infotainment has been updated with new Harman ConnectNext system with 6 speakers. The unit also offers Bluetooth handsfree as well as allows feeds from reverse parking sensors. There is also option for USB and Aux-In connectivity. So, there is no dearth of features in terms of music and connectivity but still it lags behind in the age where Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are becoming part of every segment.

The chunky steering is good to hold and soft to touch while it now also houses controls for the ConnectNext infotainment. Other comfort and convenience in the car include electrically adjustable ORVMs, height adjustable driver seat, HVAC, roof mounted rear ac vents with cooling coil, electrically operable fuel flap, 3-position lumbar support, 60:40 second row split and arm rest for driver and co-driver. Also, the instrument cluster remains unchanged with MID still missing. All you get is trip meter, digital clock and outside temperature display along with conventional speedo and tachometer. Also, lack of rear view camera and automatic climate control in such a car is something which would not under the throat of buyer.

Tata Safari Storme Engine & Gearbox

Storm is powered by all new 2.2 liter, 16 valves DOHC Common Rail Direct injection diesel Engine named VARICOR with Variable Turbine Technology (VTT) and new G76 MarkII 5-speed Gearbox. The Engine is having high inertia Fly wheel to reduce vibration and noise at higher RPM. The power output produced by engine is 140bhp at 4000rpm and torque figures are 320nm at 1700-2700rpm controlled by a 32bit processor. There is a choice of two drive trims being offered 4X2 (LX, EX, VX) and 4X4 (VX). The layout arrangement is longitudinal front engine rear wheel drive and longitudinal front engine 4 wheel drive with a transfer case. The 4 Wheel Drive has 5 speed manual gear box which is ment for Great overall response. The facelift brings no change to the suspension setup and it is ok, why fix something which ain’t broken. The earlier model offered great ride quality so the performance is the same in the facelifted version. The double wishbone type with coil spring over shock absorber at the front and rear Coil spring type 5 link rigid axle suspension enables the car to glide over ruts and broken roads like a breeze. However, if you are going over bad roads, the jolts can be directly felt on the steering which could be irritating for some.

On the contrary, the high ground clearance comes handy when exchanging tough terrains. One of the strongest points of this car is the handling, thanks to its tallness and high centre of gravity. At bends, the weight of the car can be clearly experienced. The confidence is subdued by the plenty of body roll. However, the wide tyres offer nice grip level.The hydraulic power steering offers adequate weight at high speeds.
